Zombies, or rather, Zombi's were actually made in Haitian culture back in 1697. For 3 centuries African people were enslaved and brought back to the Caribbean, once there a religion called "voodoo" developed, the belief that a persons soul could be extracted from their body, leaving the husk. A zombie.
Many people who follow the voodoo religion believe that zombies are just myths, however some believe that zombies are revived by a voodoo practitioner named "Bokor". Bokors have a tradition in which they use natural materials like shells, herbs, animal parts and bones to make what can only be described as a "Zombie powder" which contain Tetrodoxin, a deadly neurotoxin found in pufferfish.
When this toxin is used on people at a non lethal dose they may actually begin to exhibit the traits of a zombie, such as difficulty walking or standing up straight, difficulty breathing, mental confusion and due to the lack of oxygen, pale or blue skin.
A high dose of this toxin could lead to paralysis all over the body, being put into a comatose state, but luckily does not kill people. This comatose state could make it seem like you died however, which could lead to a circumstance where someone could be buried alive and have to claw themselves out of the grave.
