Globe Rowing club is located in Greenwich, London, and celebrated its 100-year anniversary this year. Globe was founded in 1923 and was based at a local pub in Deptford and was originally known as Stones Rowing Club. The club then moved between many different pubs in the Greenwich area over the years but eventually settled by the Trafalgar Tavern. During the 70s, Globe paved the way for women in the sport, being one of the first clubs in east London to accept female rowers.

Over the years, the club has made a big impact on the local community, such as in 1981 where Globe raised £3,000 for Action Aid Charity. Globe members took turns rowing in a bathtub across Danson Park Lake for 24 hours. This year Globe members did a 12-hour “Ergathon”, where members alternated rowing on 7 ergs (indoor rowing machines) for 12 hours and managed to raise £5,388.08 for Richard House Children Hospice.

Globe has a large community of members, both senior and junior, and the club has a very close community. There are many volunteers working for the club, such as the coaches who help train the junior rowers, club secretary, coordinator and treasurer who all volunteer their efforts to help the club run. One of these coaches, Hilton Green, talks about the globe community and rowing:

“Its [the Globe community] incredibly inclusive and is a lovely outlet to relieve stress. Its lovely when you're on the water when it's just tranquil and I find it puts me in a zen state, which is also fantastic. I love that they support juniors, as I've seen what it can do for young people and it's just another sublayer, social group that I feel is really healthy and it builds up resilience, responsibility, teamwork, and teaches a lot of things that possibly at that moment in life kids aren't focused on and I think it brings them to the forefront”

Globe has developed their junior section majorly after their partnership with non-profit organisation London Youth Rowing (LYR). LYR provided funding to allow more people to access the sport of rowing and to do so in a supportive and progressive environment. Their juniors have had many successes over the years since the beginning of the Globe-LYR collaboration in the early 2010s, including a win in 2022, where the J16 women's quad won at Henley Women’s Regatta. As well as this, there is a large novice section, where newcomers to the sport are welcomed and taught how to row, no matter their age or previous experience.

Over the course of this year, there have been many events held to celebrate Globe’s centenary, such as a whole club photo at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, and a celebratory 100-year dinner held at the Trafalgar Tavern.

Globe Rowing Club has an everlasting legacy and impact on its local community that has lasted for 100 years and will hopefully continue to do so well into the future.
