In today’s society, photography is everywhere. According to figures, approximately 85% of the world owns a mobile phone, which contains an expensive and extensive-quality camera. Therefore, millions of people are taking advantage of these cameras and taking beautiful photographs daily. Photography, and art in general, can be used to express many feelings that words are not capable of doing so.

Cameras were first invented in the 19th century, and since then have been used to capture portraits, landscapes, and more. Some of the most famous photographs contain images from wars, like one from the Vietnam War, captured by Nick Ut, and the photograph of Albert Einstein sticking his tongue out, by Arthur Sasse. One of my personal favourites is ‘View from the Window’ in 1827, the first photograph ever taken. There isn't much to the photograph itself, but it began the beginning of an era where photography would now be used to capture every moment desired by the photographer.

I spoke to an A-Level Photography student about their thoughts on the importance of photography, to which they replied with: “It captures specific moments in time that hold memories and history. It's almost like time travel. When you look at these photographs it can take you back in time.”

Photography is less known as an art form, but rather just an everyday action that many partake in. However, I believe that photography is much more significant than a painting, as it is taking parts of reality and constructing it to be beautiful or the opposite, but it still can convey so many different meanings.

I think that photography should be much more appreciated, and admired as a detailed art form that can be altered to whatever the heart desires. What are some of your favourite photography pieces? Or if you don't know any, search it up and find what you enjoy to look at or take photographs of!
