As young people there's only so much we can do to make a difference to the world. Woodford County’s amnesty society has been used for the course of several years as a tool for our students to act on issues. Its mission is to allow young students to feel as if they are part of change by educating and action.

Amnesty International embraces a diverse group of students with members ranging from year 7 to 13. It is an essential part of the school’s community drawing from global crisis and taking action no matter how small our work may seem compared to the issue. Amnesty’s aim was to help end world poverty starting this academic year. Even though this is a monumental issue, amnesty rose to the challenge to make a dent in what seems like a mountain of global suffering. A food drive was launched, with plans to collect and raise donations for the Redbridge Food bank.

Logistician, Ashlee Barker says:

‘We as the future generation, play a vital role in ensuring world peace is established by standing against the humanitarian crisis. By doing this food drive, not only do we take part in change but inspire others to join the cause. That’s what Amnesty is all about. Creating change’.

The past couple of weeks emitted such an array of skills that truly demonstrate the passionate nature of Amnesty Society at Woodford County: creativity skills needed for designing collection boxes, leadership depicted from Andrea and Prabha to ensure our event runs smoothy across the next 2 weeks and evocative communicators to speak to form groups, bringing awareness of our plans.

Our meet-ups don’t just consist of strictly business but also are a time for meeting new people within an uplifting atmosphere. Recently, the Creativity team had a messy, but enjoyable time, using paints to bring their vision of donation boxes to life. To those wanting to donate to the food bank or even thinking of joining the society, if you are willing to advocate change and essentially shape our future, these steps are certainly on the right path for a more just and safer world.
