Harrow is steeped in history and has been called ‘home’ by many famous faces. From Winston Churchill attending the prestigious ‘Harrow School’, to Elton John beginning his music career in this very London Borough, Harrow is no stranger to fame.
In his early childhood, Elton John was raised in a council house by his grandparents and attended various schools including ‘Pinner Wood Junior School’, ‘Reddiford School’ and ‘Pinner County Grammar School.’ It was in these institutions that John found his love of music, learning to play the piano from the age of seven and performing in front of large audiences at the ‘Northwood Hills Hotel.’
In 2009 there were plans to name a road after the iconic pop star however this fell through. Even so, Harrow can be attributed to the success of John, being the foundation of his music career that would eventually lead him on to global stardom.
McFly singer, Tom Fletcher, also grew up in Harrow, studying at Harrow College. He most recently sold his house for £2.5 million – in Northwood, a neighbouring London Borough.
Peter Andre, having lived in Harrow for the first six years of his life, says that “growing up in Harrow was wonderful.” He attended Sudbury Primary School before emigrating to Australia. Andre has paid numerous visits to his hometown in recent years, performing at charity events in Harrow Arts Centre, Hatch End and watching films with his family in the Vue cinema.
Harrow is far from ordinary, having shaped the careers of many notable figures in the past. These music icons will leave legacies on many more generations to come.
