Young Reporter "The Witches" at the National Theatre review

On the 22nd of November, I travelled to the National Theatre with my drama group, Southside Theatre Academy, to watch the new musical adaptation of The Witches, by Roald Dahl. In my opinion, it was very enjoyable, and I would definitely recommend a trip to see it!

The play ran for roughly 2 hours with a 20-minute interval in between. The lighting, props, and special effects were amazing. In addition, the entirety of the show was enhanced by the atmosphere it created, as the audience responded well to the jokes and significant moments. The actors used direct address which added to the involvement of the audience and enable the comedic moments to be delivered effectively.

In addition, I loved the fact the show had many children, who’s talent was unbelievable. I particularly enjoyed the scene at the start of the performance, in which the main character tells a story through song, that involved lots of children and I thought was extremely creative.

I asked one of my friends who also watched the performance, what she thought of it. “I thought it was a great adaptation of the iconic story ‘the witches’”, said Cloe, “the set was insane and the costume following along with that. The harmonies and singing was out of this world.” In addition, she did state that “no Roald Dahl musical adaptation will overtake Matilda!”

In conclusion, I think that the musical was a thoroughly entertaining experience, with fantastic songs, an extremely talented cast, and all in all, it was humorous, immersive, and well-constructed.
