On Saturday the 24th of February, the Wilson’s under 15C team faced a difficult fixture against local school Epsom College,in a home match.

They unfortunately faced a 3-0 loss, that the captain, Keshav Toppay, believes could have been easily prevented.

When asked if he thought Wilson’s could have won, he stated “We started off decently, we had good opportunities, especially from the corner kicks, but we suffered from not being clinical. The team needs to stop being afraid and put their head on the ball, because we could have easily scored two if it wasn’t for hesitation. If we were just more confident, we could have easily won.”

He also responded to what he thought ultimately led to the WIlsonian defeat, stating “The midfield was all over the place, especially in the second half. After Epsom scored their initial goal, the team panicked, especially the midfield - which seemed to focus on defence rather than offence, when offence was what we really needed. The midfield seemed to morph into the back line, making it easy for Epsom to move through the middle half of the pitch. Although we were playing at home, the pitch was theirs.’

Keshav also believed that the defence and offence was partly responsible, and the team as a whole could learn from this defeat. He held the opinion that the defence were playing ‘hot potato’ at times, making short passes in critical areas, when he thought it would be much safer to kick the ball out of play, to cool off the pressure. He quoted what he has been taught in his time as a defender, “If in doubt, kick it out!”

The Wilson’s under 15C team plays their last match of the year in around two weeks time from writing, on Saturday the 9th of March, and Keshav thinks that to be able to win the team needs to ‘learn from what happened last Saturday’ and take on board the improvements that need to be made.

Overall, Keshav maintains trust in the Wilsonians, and as a strong captain he does not give up hope, but looks forward to improvement and hopefully victory, as he holds the firm belief that it is undoubtedly possible.
