On Saturday 10th of February, Millions of families worldwide gathered together to celebrate the lunar new year, also known as the Chinese new year. Each year features a zodiac animal, of which there are 12 in total. This year was the year of the dragon.

Chinese new year is very different to the western new year; it is the most important festival in the year for the people who celebrate it and it’s a time of family, celebration and joy. It is a national holiday in many Asian countries. In China, families celebrate by eating meals together and watching fireworks. Another unique tradition is that the elderly will give children red envelopes filled with money. Traditionally, this is symbolic of warding away evil and offers protection. In addition, many performances and events occur which include lion or dragon dancing, Chinese opera and martial art performances. There are many street processions as well, for example at Trafalgar square on Sunday the 11th, there was a large celebration and parade.

Not only is this celebrated in China, but internationally, Asian communities come to celebrate the new year as well. In America, hosted a huge lunar year parade with thousands attending. In other Asian countries like Malaysia and Indonesia, people celebrated with fireworks, eating delicious foods, and of course enjoying the national day off work.
