A new festival showcasing the work of artists of Black, Asian and global majority ethnicities is coming to Lewisham this June.

SEEN, a new Global Majority festival, is set to highlight the inherent artistic talent in one of London’s most diverse boroughs.

The festival aims to showcase, mentor and fund artists from these communities, providing them a platform to elevate and amplify their work.

SEEN Festival is a collaborative partnership between the London Borough of Lewisham and Nouveau Riche, an innovative and multi-award-winning arts company.

Funding for the festival is provided by Lewisham Council, the Mayor of London and the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.

The festival serves as a legacy following Lewisham’s year as the London Borough of Culture in 2022.

The Broadway Theatre in Catford will host the SEEN Festival from Monday, June 10 to Sunday, June 16.

Kickstarting the festival is Black Wall Street, The Dreamland, a production by Khareem Jamal on Friday, June 14.

The programme is packed with captivating performances and showcases from local artists, performers and designers who responded to a call for submissions in February.

Artists chosen have received funding to bring their performances to life, with mentorship from industry pioneers.

Mentors will come from Nouveau Riche, a multi-award-winning creative movement focussed on discovering, nurturing and producing unique stories.

Led by Global Majority Artists, Nouveau Riche also co-produces the festival.

Alleyne Dance, a UK-based company founded by award-winning twin sisters Kristina and Sadé Alleyne, will also provide mentorship.

The Alleyne sisters blend West African, Caribbean, Hip Hop, and Kathak influences into dynamic movement and have presented their work internationally.

Another mentor, Josh Oladipo, is an influential force in the music industry.

Renowned for his electronic psychedelia and soul sound, South London-born Oladipo has collaborated with talents such as Kojey Radical and Lucy Rose.

Lewisham Mayor Brenda Dacres said: "Lewisham is buzzing with creativity and talent coming from the rich cultures of Global Majority communities.

"SEEN Festival will build on the legacy of our year as The Mayor of London’s London Borough of Culture, where local talent thrived."

Ryan Calais-Cameron from Nouveau Riche added: "I grew up in Catford, an area that has always been a huge colourful cultural hub of art and creativity.

"SEEN will continue in that legacy, a festival that will have the very best of what Lewisham and London has to offer all in one place."

Deputy Mayor for Culture and the Creative Industries, Justine Simons OBE, said: "It’s great to see Lewisham continue to celebrate diversity through the arts.
