This is an interview conducted with Molly Pearl Watson, a young creative, who is the founder and creator of BIGPIX zine which is a physical and online zine that is put out internationally.
- Why did you start making a zine?
“I just moved to a new place and wanted to meet people who were interested in the same things as me. I love art, music, movies, and literature, so starting a zine was just getting a platform to meet new people on.”
- What is your long-term goal and mission with your zine?
“To just get people to read it or look at it for a little while. We are living in an extremely digital age, which is honestly really cool but at the same time, I want a physical archive of my youth. I want to look back in 10 years and see what seventeen-year-old me was doing, and what did I think was important. As for long-term goals, I plan to continue releasing monthly issues until I graduate and see how I’m feeling from there, hopefully, I’ll have a decent-sized platform and be able to share even cooler stuff and meet even cooler people.”
- How are you going to expand, if even at all?
“I want to start posting more on YouTube and such, I do anyways but its-a-lot more visual than auditory if that makes sense. I’m also in the process of figuring out the cheapest way I can print this magazine and send it to anyone who wants to have a physical copy.”
- What are some things you want to see in your zine?
“I’m obsessed with skate bags and stuff that showcase a physical skill; I would love to include something like that but also stories to share from a plethora of different subcultures. I think everyone has a story to share so that could be interesting. I’d love to interview more artists, and make it more interactive, adding crosswords or weird games. I want my magazine to showcase people and passions, including the reader. Anyone can submit anything to be in the zine, that means essays, poems, photos, artwork, movie reviews, screenplays, recipes, literally anything. It’s not just an archive for me, it’s for everyone.”
- Are you hoping this would inspire change? If so to what level?
“I hope it helps people find things to be passionate about, but as for change, I don’t think I will impact much and I’m okay with that.”
