On the 8th March 2024, The UK alongside many other countries across the globe marked the 113th International Women’s Day. The day officially became recognised in 1911 and since then the day has been commemorated with iconic events and a true celebration for all, quite frankly a day to truly appreciate the greatest achievements in history.

Many countries in Europe celebrated International women’s day, such as France which guaranteed a constitutional right for women across the country. The UK, more closely looking at London, celebrated the day with inspiring speakers coming into schools and corporations to honour and recognise the wonderful achievements of women, as well as fund-raising events for charities supporting women’s rights across the world.

Across London, we celebrated many events, such as a concert involving female composed artists who empower women through their music. Furthermore, many people across London gathered for an International Women’s day guided talk, starting in St. Pauls Cathedral all the way to Borough Market, talking about the history of women through the ages, and the many challenges women have had to overcome. In Particular, my school celebrated the day joined by inspirational female speakers who work in typically male dominated fields. This was particularly inspiring as these women defied stereotypical gender norms and became successful as a result.

Despite IWD only being held one day a year, there are many  events in your local area to celebrate the many achievements of women across the world. On the 28th March in Camden, a fashion show will be held to celebrate the work of female owned small businesses.

If this year you were unable to attend some events, there are still so many ways you can celebrate! For example, educate yourself and research about some inspiring women and discover the journey they have faced when creating their companies and inventions, or simply the pathway to their success! You could even support small businesses in your local area owned by women to help celebrate IWD.

Next year International women’s day will be celebrated on Saturday 8 March 2025, so keep an eye out for any events held in your local area.
