A jury has said a man did attack a police officer, almost killing him with a piece of broken glass in Essex.

Officers were called to Station Approach in Harlow in September 2022 to assist with a missing person enquiry relating to Ahmed Poka, 23, of Boxted Road, Colchester.

At the scene, an Essex Police officer approached Poka, who slashed the officer across the jaw and neck with a piece of glass, causing a serious injury.

Poka was deemed unfit to stand trial at Chelmsford Crown Court after he was charged with attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

In 2023, Poka said he did not want to speak to any doctors after experts decided he was not fit to issue a plea and would need an examination.

He faced a trial of facts, which is held in cases where a defendant is not fit to enter a plea and after hearing key evidence on June 3, a jury came to the decision within 28 minutes that Poka carried out the act.

Poka will remain in custody until a further hearing to decide the outcome, with the date yet to be determined.
