A man has been arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty and indecent exposure among other offences after a police incident in Croydon.

Police were called to Cherry Orchard Road at 6.20pm on Tuesday (August 6) and a man had barricaded himself inside a building and was allegedly throwing objects at police officers.

Cordons were put in place as a precautionary measure to protect the public.

The man was arrested before 3am today (August 7) on suspicion of animal cruelty, criminal damage, indecent exposure, and breach of a court order.

He was later detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to a hospital in south London.

London Fire Brigade also attended the scene at 7.34pm on Tuesday and the incident was over for them at 3.11am on Wednesday.

30 firefighters from Croydon, Woodside, and Norbury attended the scene.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “At about 6.20pm on Tuesday, August 6, officers attended Cherry Orchard Road in Croydon to carry out arrest enquiries in connection with an ongoing investigation.

“On arrival, the man barricaded himself inside before throwing objects at officers.

“Cordons were put in place as a precaution to ensure the safety of members of the public. 

“The man was arrested shortly before 3am on Wednesday, August 7, on suspicion of cruelty to animals, criminal damage, indecent exposure and breach of a court order.

“He was subsequently detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to a south London hospital.”

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: “Firefighters were mobilised to assist emergency service colleagues at an incident on Cherry Orchard Road in Croydon.

“The Brigade was called at 7.34pm on August 6 and the incident was over for firefighters at 3.11am on August 7.

“Five fire engines and around 30 firefighters from Croydon, Woodside, Norbury and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.”
