London's Shapespeare's Globe Theatre was evacuated during the middle of a performance after a firework landed inside the landmark.

The incident took place last night, August 7, during a performance of Antony and Cleopatra at around 10pm.

Reaching its final scene, the play was disrupted when a fireworks display nearby on the Thames saw one firework misfire towards the Globe.

The red firework went into the open-topped theatre into the standing section just missing audience members as the smell of smoke filled the area.

Shakespeare's Globe Theatre evacuated

Although not confirmed yet, it is understood that the fireworks were set off by football fans nearby celebrating the anniversary of an Algerian football club.

Social media users shared scenes of the fireworks in the centre of London as guests attending the play at the Globe told the Mail that it was a miracle no one got hurt.

As Mark Johnson from Tooting said: "It was really confusing. It felt like it was near the end of the performance when we saw bright red lights in the sky. Most of the audience looked up and we saw fireworks and there was a general sense of confusion. Even the actors and actresses looked up."

The Shakespeare performance was stopped and staff guided guests to the basement where they waited for 20 minutes before being able to leave the building.

A guest at the show said a message at the theatre read: "Unfortunately it is necessary to end the performance. Please exit the theatre following directions from our stewarding team. The ticketing team will process refunds as soon as possible and contact you if necessary."

User of X (formerly Twitter) said: "I expect it’s nothing - but a big load of flares just went off Red Dawn style near my flat in Central London."
