A balcony has been destroyed after a fire in a high rise block of flats in Blackwall yesterday afternoon.

Firefighters were called just before 1.30pm on Monday (August 26) to reports of the fire on Bacayne Avenue.

A small part of a five-roomed flat on the 25th floor of the 45-storey building was also damaged by the fire.

There has been no reports of any injuries.

London Fire Brigade's 999 control officers received more than 110 calls about the fire, which was brought under control by 2.50pm.

Ten fire engines and 70 firefighters from Millwall, Plaistow, Shadwell, and nearby stations attended the scene.

A 64-metre turntable ladder was used as a lookout tower to assist firefighters in managing their response.

The fire is being treated as accidental and is believed to have been caused by the unsafe disposal of smoking materials.

London Fire Brigade has since issued a safety reminder about smoking.

A spokesperson for the brigade said: "If you smoke it is vitally important you stub it right out, preferably in an ashtray.

"Always ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it.

"If you don’t, you risk causing a fire as you don’t know what it may land on which could potentially start a fire."
