1. Paul Spiers: Beckenham’s beloved road sweeper
Since 2017, Paul Spiers has been a cherished figure in Beckenham, brightening the streets as a road sweeper.
This August, Paul and his brother enjoyed a well-deserved week-long getaway to Albufeira, Portugal, courtesy of On the Beach.
Despite a local fundraiser led by friend Lisa Knight aiming to celebrate Paul’s birthday, contractual restrictions with Bromley Council prevented him from accepting the GoFundMe funds.
In response to this, package holiday provider On the Beach organised the trip as part of a “special competition” recognising Paul’s community contributions.

2. Charlotte Arnold: Sidcup’s new pet care enthusiast
Leaving behind a career in events management, dog mum Charlotte Arnold launched Petpals in Sidcup in early August.
This UK-based pet care service offers premium options including dog walking, sitting, and boarding. Charlotte, a lifelong animal lover, is now ready to provide top-notch pet care to communities across south east London.

3. Allodi Accordions: A Lewisham legacy ends
After 50 years of serving aspiring musicians, Allodi Accordions on Lee High Road will soon close its doors.
Shop owner Emilio Allodi, inspired by his father and uncle, has announced the store’s closure, expressing a mix of sadness and relief as he steps back from a beloved family business.

4. Mold and Russell Tailors: Sidcup says goodbye to a tailoring icon
Phillip Russell, one of the faces behind Mold and Russell Tailors, has retired after an impressive 62-year career.
Known for his exceptional bespoke tailoring, Phillip has been a respected figure in Sidcup.
At 81, he steps away from his needle and thread with heartfelt regret but also with a sense of accomplishment.

5. Kevin Rumble: A Sidcup park resident’s resilience
Kevin Rumble, who found solace living in Old Farm Park after becoming homeless, faced eviction in August.
Despite the challenges, Kevin embraced life close to nature, finding happiness in his unconventional home.
His story is one of resilience and finding joy in unexpected places.
6. Yu Sheng: Dartford’s lottery winner Dartford resident
Yu Sheng experienced a life-changing moment when she won £250,000 on the People’s Postcode Lottery.
Just hours before a long-awaited trip to China, Yu, a Chinese Mandarin teacher, celebrated the win with her two sons.
The windfall, shared with three other neighbours, added a joyful twist to their summer.
