Unleaded prices dropped by four pence per litre (ppl) throughout August, and prices are continuing to fall so far this September.
Prices as low as this were last seen back at the start of the year, during the third week of January.
There was also good news for diesel drivers, as August opened with an average price of £1.49 before falling to £1.44 at the end of the month.
On August 28, RAC issued an urgent appeal to the UK’s biggest fuel retailers to cut fuel prices at the pumps to reflect a “steady drop in wholesale costs”, which began at the start of July and accelerated sharply last week.
