Downham Leisure Centre has reopened after a £400,000 refurbishment of its gym.

The leisure centre reopened on August 19, 2024, following the “extensive upgrade”.

Changes made to the gym include the “latest immersive, on-demand fitness equipment from Life Fitness” as well as new flooring, energy efficient lighting and “modern décor”.

This refurb was undertaken with the aim of providing the local community with an “exceptional fitness environment”.

A spokesperson for Downham Leisure Centre said: “The reinvigorated space introduces a host of new features designed to enhance the workout experience for all members.”

For cardio-lovers, the gym now has “state-of-the-art machines” with 16-inch touch screen consoles.

Members will also be able to access Hammer Strength, weight lifting platforms and resistance equipment in addition to a new, functional training area with an “enhanced turf track”.

One of the major additions to the gym is the dedicated IC6 indoor cycling studio which features bikes with magnetic resistance and built-in power metres.

This means gym-goers can track their effort and performance throughout their classes.

Alongside the upgrades to equipment, the gym has also redesigned its layout for “better flow” and accessibility.

The leisure centre is operated by 1Life Management Solutions and the revamp was completed in partnership with Lewisham Council.

Steve Bambury, COO from 1Life, the operator, commented: "We are thrilled to have facilitated significant investment at Downham Health and Leisure Centre with the latest in fitness technology.

“Our goal is to provide members with high-quality equipment and environment that enhances their workout experience and motivates them to achieve their fitness goals.

“We listened to the changes our members requested and are pleased to have been able to provide for a range of different user groups"

Glen Hall, Managing Director of Parkwood Leisure, 1Life owner, added: "Investing in the Downham Health and Leisure Centre refurbishment is part of our ongoing commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve.

“We believe that the new facilities will inspire more people to get active and enjoy the benefits of a healthier lifestyle.

“We look forward to welcoming both new and returning members to experience the upgraded gym."
