Residents are being warned about the dangers of Brazilian Butt Lift procedures, particularly those carried out by certain companies in Brentwood.

Redbridge Council has become the latest local authority to ban certain companies from conducting the non-surgical aesthetic procedure, commonly known as a BBL or Liquid BBL, due to risks including "medical interventions and hospitalisation".

The council also put out a health and safety warning for residents, saying its environment heath team has "particular concerns" about an individual and associated companies based in Brentwood.

It comes after Brentwood Council's own environment health team investigated "cases of hospitalisation" due to members of the public undergoing BBLs in the borough in July.

The Essex local authority issued similar prohibition notices under the The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, which banned firms from administering Brazilian Butt Lift procedures until the risks were "controlled".

A spokesperson for Redbridge Council's environmental health team said that some individuals who have undergone BBLs experienced "excruciating pain, discomfort and infections".

They said: "The health and safety of people in Redbridge is our number one priority.

"We strongly recommend that anyone considering a non-surgical aesthetic procedure do their research.

"If the cost of the treatment is lower than the market average, proceed with caution, as the practitioner may not be using the advertised products."

The spokesperson added: "If you have undergone this procedure and you're experiencing pain, discomfort and signs of infection, please seek medical assistance immediately."

Non-surgical BBLs involve injecting dermal filler into the buttocks, often made up of hyaluronic acid, to make them bigger or more rounded.

The procedure is legal in the UK, however is currently unlicensed and unregulated.

Redbridge Council emphasised that, although Liquid BBLs are non-surgical, they still require a sterile clinical environment, with appropriate treatment rooms.

The council urged anyone who has had the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure to get in contact with them via trading.standards@redbridge.gov.uk.
