The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has released the 52nd edition of its Good Beer Guide, the UK’s best-selling beer and pub directory.

The guide, which features 4,500 of the best pubs nationwide, is a must-have for beer enthusiasts seeking top-quality pints across the UK.

This year’s edition highlights seven popular Lewisham pubs that have made the prestigious list.

Despite a challenging economic climate, over 900 new pubs have been added to the 2024 guide, thanks to the hard work of licensees and pub lovers.

Compiled by thousands of CAMRA volunteers, the Good Beer Guide showcases the vibrant pub and social club culture at risk of being lost.

Here are the seven Lewisham pubs that have been recognised in the 2025 edition.

Brockley Barge

The Brockley Barge is a Wetherspoon’s pub which can be found on Brockley Road.

A Google reviewer said: “As an ale drinker I appreciate that the staff at Wetherspoons always seem to know how to properly pour a pint.

“Given the barge is one of the best value pubs in the area, their guest cask ale is consistently high quality and expertly kept, and often nicer than more expensive pubs in the area.”

London Beer Dispensary

Also situated on Brockley Road, London Beer Dispensary is another popular pub recognised in CAMRA’s latest guide.

A TripAdvisor reviewer said: “The bar staff were really friendly and there was a good choice of beers - wine less so, but we had a nice glass and I guess the pub is called the Beer Dispensary.”

Dog & Bell

Based in Prince Street, the Dog & Bell serves real ales and imported lagers and describes itself as “a traditional pub with a welcoming vibe”.

A Google reviewer said: “The nicest pub in London that I have ever stepped into.

“They've got at least 20 superb Belgian bottled ales available, currently under £7 apiece. The staff is genuinely nice.

“And if the weather is pleasant, they have plenty of outdoor seating on a quiet street.”

Blythe Hill Tavern

CAMRA has included the Blythe Hill Tavern, situated in Stanstead Road, for its cask beers, ciders and classic Victorian building.

A TripAdvisor reviewer said: “Very welcoming and friendly, authentic, unspoilt pub.

“Best in the area by far - beer is good too! I would highly recommend it.”

Royal Albert

The Royal Albert can be found in New Cross Road and is run by Portobello brewery.

It is a grade-II listed building and describes itself as “your home away from home”.

A Google reviewer said: “Top notch - take my money and bring your friends.

“Simple yet well executed with pizzazz. Knowledgeable, helpful and friend staff.”

Shirker’s Rest

On its website, The Shirker’s Rest promises “top quality cask and keg beers from independent, mainly local breweries” as well as a range of other drinks and food.

It can be found in Lewisham Way and was recognised by CAMRA for its quirky sense of character.

A TripAdvisor reviewer said: “This place is one of the best in London and even worth a special journey.

“Only few minutes from New Cross or New Cross gate.

“It has a really nice range of beers - stout, porter and two sours were on - and very reasonably priced.”

Sylcan Post

Based in Dartmouth Road, this pub has the unique twist of being in an old post office.

It offers quiz nights, outdoor seating and Sunday roasts.

A Google reviewer said: “Nice chilled out boozer not far from Forest Hill Station.

“It has three cask ales and lots of craft on tap, many from the host Portobello Brewery.

“The service was decent, and the vibe was very laid back and welcoming.”
