South Woodford Library & Gym to close for one year

Reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) was discovered at South Woodford Library and Gym during a structural inspection on September 5.

Redbridge Council has said following the inspections the building will be closed for an estimated 12 months as the work required in the building is "extensive".

A council spokesperson said: "While there is no immediate danger to the structure of the building, the concrete needs to be replaced to keep everyone safe.

"We cannot and will never compromise on the safety of local people, which is rightly our priority."

To accommodate library and gym users, temporary facilities will open at the Redbridge Drama Centre, in nearby Churchfields.

These include a pop-up library, café, fitness studio, and study area.

Some rooms within the drama centre will be converted into a multi-purpose gym, where equipment will be moved for people to use.

The work will be done by the council's partner Vision.

All activities at the drama centre will continue and users can book sessions through the Vision app.

Existing Vision members can freeze or cancel their membership or use other Vision facilities which are free.

Members can use Wanstead Leisure Centre, Woodford Green Library & Gym, Fullwell Cross Leisure Centre, Mayfield Leisure Centre, and Loxford Leisure Centre.

Kenneth More Theatre, in Oakfield Road, has also been forced to close after RAAC was found in the building.

All shows due to take place, including the annual Christmas pantomime, have been cancelled at the venue.

The council spokesperson added: "We are doing all we can to provide alternative services while we carry out these essential works.

"However, we understand the closure is frustrating, and we apologise for the inconvenience it will cause.

"The safety of local people will always be our top priority."
