A pub serving a “nostalgia and butter-laden apple and plum crumble” has been named as one of Britain’s cosiest boozers.
The Marksman in Hackney Road, Hackney, is one of 50 pubs to be awarded the accolade by The Good Food Guide.
Pubs on the list were described as those that serve up “relaxed, warm vibes, good local beers and even better cooking” – in essence, the perfect hangouts as the autumn draws in.

Owned by Jon Rotheram and Tom Harris, the pub underwent a makeover in 2015 and has since become a firm favourite in the area.
The Good Food Guide visited on a rainy Friday evening, and said that the Marksman “glows with pubby welcome”.
Decked out with a mahogany bar and leather banquettes, the guide’s review adds that the ground floor is typically “alive with end-of-the week chatter”.
It continues: “Pints are pulled, wine is poured, the bar is propped up.
“Upstairs, the dining room is more restrained, with little distracting from the business of dinner.”
The pub is noted for a wine list “that bristles with interest” - a natural Catarratto from the coastal Barraco winery in Marsala, Sicily is recommended.
Chicken and girolles pie and roast cull yaw are among the dishes on offer, as well as a “nostalgia and butter-laden apple and plum crumble”.
Owner Jon Rotheram credited the pub’s success on the continuity in its interior design, which give the Marksman “a sense of warmth”.
The Good Food Guide clearly agrees – rating the pub ‘very good’ for ‘warmth’, and ‘good’ for ‘uniqueness’ and ‘deliciousness’.
Mr Rotheram added: “We work very hard to keep the pub looking very much like a pub and familiar, while also giving it a contemporary feel with the more modern dining room upstairs.”
The Marksman at 254 Hackney Road is open 12pm unti 12am Wednesday to Sunday, and from 4pm on a Tuesday.
