A puppet theatre that runs a 'magical week' for children was chosen for a £5,000 'golden grant' prize donation.
Tesco customers at Cally Road Esso Express were given the chance to take part in a lucky dip for gold version of Tesco’s famous blue voting token.
Little Angel Theatre was one of three local charities that customers could vote for to receive the £5,000 Golden Grant as part of Tesco’s Stronger Starts scheme.
The winner of the lucky dip on September 21 chose the theatre, which works with Whittington Health and Smoking Apples Theatre Company to run Spectrum Summer School.
This is a chance for young people in Islington to take part in a magical week filled with puppetry design and performance.
“Children take part in our ‘magical week’ with puppetry and performance in a space that caters to their specific needs,” Little Angel Theatre’s Imogen Newman explained.
“We have ear defenders on hand, quiet spaces and one-to-one support — it’s important to have creative spaces like this.”
"I supported with Spectrum Summer School in August 2024, and I was lucky enough to see first-hand how important and transformative creative, accessible spaces like this can be."
Supermarkets up and down the country took part in ‘golden grants’ lucky dips with £500,000 dished out to 100 schools and projects, working with the Groundwork UK charity.
Tesco’s head of communities Claire De Silva said: “Giving just £5,000 can make a huge difference to a project. Shoppers use blue tokens to vote for a project to benefit people in their community.”
The grants help provide nutritious food and healthy activities with breakfast clubs or buying equipment. The supermarket chain has given out £120 million since 2016 to 67,000 projects.
