Council leader Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz is set to stand down after she was offered a job at City Hall.

The Islington councillor, who was first elected in 2013 and has been leader for more than three years, has been offered the position of London Deputy Mayor for policing and crime.

If her appointment is confirmed by the London Assembly policing and crime committee, Cllr Comer-Schwartz plans to resign her positions as both leader and councillor.

This would trigger a by-election for her Junction ward – the third such vote in Islington this year, after two by-elections in Hillrise ward.

Cllr Comer-Schwartz said that serving as a councillor in the community where she grew up has been the “privilege of my life”.

She cited creating low-traffic “liveable” neighbourhoods and efforts to tackle the housing crisis as among her achievements in office.

The council leader added: “London is the greatest city on earth, and the opportunity to continue the fundamental reform of policing and approach to justice the Mayor has worked hard to deliver is an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “Nothing is more important to me than keeping Londoners safe.

“Kaya brings extensive experience to the role, working to make Londoners safer and improving trust and confidence in the police, which we know leads to reductions in violence and crime.”
