A new zebra crossing has been proposed for a major road in Romford where drivers are found to "regularly" speed.

Havering Council has put forward a new safety improvement scheme for North Street, which would see a zebra crossing installed, with zig-zag road markings and textured paving to help those with visual impairments.

The proposed crossing - which would be put in place north of Park Drive, near Romford Bus Garage - also includes illuminated Belisha beacon posts to alert drivers to the presence of the crossing.

It comes after a study by the council found that up to 1,700 vehicles per hour use North Street - with drivers "regularly" reaching speeds of up to 50 mph.

Analysis of collision records also showed that 25 "personal injury accidents" were recorded along the street, between A12 Eastern Avenue West and the St Edwards Way roundabout.

The council did not provide a timescale for when its study took place or for how long.

Of these crashes, two were serious, four involved pedestrians, two happened in wet conditions and five occurred when it was dark.

This paper reported on a crash along North Street in August that left two people in hospital.

The council's scheme aims to reduce collisions and improve the safety of pedestrians.

It is goes ahead, it will be funded by Transport for London (TfL).

The council is urging residents to have their say on the proposals, with comments welcomed until November 1 via schemes@havering.gov.uk.
