A car wash site has been demolished to make way for five houses - but now the developer wants to add an extra bedroom to each house.

A planning application has been submitted to Havering Council by Stephensons, on behalf of Mr M Choda, for the construction of five four-bedroom houses at the corner of Rainham Road and Victory Road, Rainham.

This follows previous plans for the same site - approved with conditions in November 2021 - to demolish a car wash and build five houses with three bedrooms.

The planning documents reveal that Havering building control have been appointed to oversee the construction and that works have already started.

Foundations were completed by September 19, however a fresh application has since been submitted to go from the three bedrooms previously approved to four.

These rooms would be a combination of double and single or twin rooms, with the smallest rooms having 7.5m space to one side of the bed.

Under the new plans, each of the five houses would be three storeys - to accommodate the additional bedroom in the roof - and a maximum height of 8.6 metres.

However in the original 2021 plans, the houses were limited to two storeys so that they would fit in with the look of the nearby properties.

The planning documents said: "There were concerns that the building proposed at pre-application stage, which rose to three storeys, would fail to relate with the height and scale of neighbouring development."

However, the applicant insists that the appearance of the houses under the current plans will be "more robust" than the original proposal, and will "still be in keeping with the area".

Other changes laid out in the current plans include amendments to the landscaping and window design.

Previous proposals for the car wash site have been refused, including an application in 2018 for six three-bedroom houses, and two further applications made this year for changes to the landscaping of the new development.

Havering Council is expected to make a decision on whether the houses will have an extra bedroom by December 12.
