More homes could be built during the first phase of a planned housing development in Finchley Road.

Camden Council has already approved plans for many of the existing buildings at the O2 Centre site to be knocked down to make way for 1,800 homes.

Initially, 600 homes were earmarked for the first stage of the development, where the former Homebase store and hundreds of car park spaces can currently be found.

But developer Landsec has said it now hopes to submit an application to the council to change some of the details of the approved plans.

This includes increasing the number of homes built during the first phase of the development to around 650.

The revised plans will see most of the blocks built during this phase having one or two additional floors to accommodate the new homes.

The total number of homes provided in the final development is expected to remain unchanged.

Other proposed changes to the plans include planting 55 extra trees, creating an additional tennis court sized area of open space and an enlarged community centre.

Work on this initial stage of the development is expected to start early next year, including the reconfiguration of the shopping centre’s car park.

A series of community events and workshops about the revised plans will be taking place within a new consultation area on the second floor of the O2 Centre in the coming weeks.

These include drop-in sessions on October 24 from 4.30pm to 8pm, October 26 from 11am to 3pm and November 6 from 4.30pm to 8pm.
