A popular Lidl store in Chessington is set to reopen after undergoing an expansion and refurbishment ahead of Christmas 2024.

The store, located at 64 Leatherhead Road, aims to provide the community with access to a "bigger and better" shopping experience.

A spokesperson for Lidl said they cannot confirm the exact date as to when the Chessington store will reopen, as it is “subject to change”.

In addition to the renovations in Chessington, Lidl is also planning to open three new stores in Caterham, Hoxton Street, and Forest Gate, while a store in Dagenham will undergo similar expansion and refurbishment.

These developments are expected to enhance access to Lidl's high-quality, affordable products for more Londoners.

The new store openings are anticipated to create hundreds of jobs in the capital, where Lidl was named the third-largest supermarket last year.

Recent research from Which? highlights that convenience stores often come with a higher price tag, forcing shoppers to pay significantly more for the same items compared to larger outlets, particularly in London.

Lidl’s national price promise underscores its commitment to ensuring that everyone has access to affordable, quality food, regardless of their location.

Outside of London, Lidl's expansion continues at pace, with plans to open a total of ten new stores across the UK by Christmas—from Berwick Green in Bristol to Bovey Tracey in Devon.

Richard Taylor, Chief Development Officer at Lidl GB, said: “Our plan to open three new stores in London before Christmas demonstrates our continued commitment to providing more communities across the country with access to affordable, quality food, as well as employment opportunities.

“But we still have big ambitions for our expansion plans to open hundreds more Lidl stores in the future.

"Our teams are constantly scouring the country for new sites, identifying opportunities not just in towns where we don’t currently have stores, but also in areas where existing stores are experiencing increasing demand.

“Our sale and leaseback deal is just the latest example of how we’re continuing to expand our footprint across the country, ensuring that even more households can benefit from a Lidl store nearby.”

This news comes alongside Lidl’s recent sale and leaseback deal with Roadside Real Estate Plc and Meadow Partners, valued at £70 million.

This agreement includes the development of 12 new stores in locations such as Crediton, Manchester, and Saffron Walden.

Lidl has also released a wish list of future store locations in London, targeting areas from Camden to Clapham and Shoreditch to Notting Hill, as part of its strategy to expand its footprint across the country.
