Sticks’n’Sushi is one of those restaurant chains across London that you know you can rely on, you know you’ll get good food and you know it’s going to be a lovely meal.
The news that it is opening even more of its restaurants into even more of its areas is so welcomed, because in my opinion you can’t get enough of sticks, sushi and Sticks’n’Sushi.
The chain is set to open its newest restaurant in Battersea very soon, and this follows its latest opening in Islington – which I was lucky enough to visit and try.
I love the upmarket yet relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the Sticks’n’Sushi restaurants, and sat in the bustling Upper Street, the new Islington restaurant is no different.
It sits on a busy road filled with lots of life, restaurants, pubs and more – but stands out because of its renowned branding and reliable good food.
The interiors combine Japanese minimalism with Scandinavian elegance, whilst also reflecting the storytelling of the residential address.
Made up of two single-storey buildings, they come together to create inviting dining spaces – you can sit near the kitchen counter to catch the chefs in action, relax in in the lounge with maki and cocktails, or enjoy a spot of alfresco dining while you watch the world go by.
I went to the Islington hotspot with a friend for a much-needed catch up, and we started by ordering a large glass of rose wine from the extensive cocktail and wine list.
Our waiters and waitresses were friendly, and offered to give any advice or recommendations on the menu.
We had an idea of what we wanted as we both have some Sticks’n’Sushi classic favourites, but the menu was slightly newer so we could explore some different options.
We wanted to share and therefore went for a large selection of different plates – including shake tataki (thinly sliced salmon in a ponzu-style dressing), tuna tartare bites (which are a personal favourite), soy and sesame edamame (a great twist on a classic dish) and some salmon and tuna sashimi.
We had some grilled broccoli in a sesame dressing and some spicy tuna sushi too.
The sticks are some of my favourite options and we went for miso black cod and salmon teriyaki. The miso black cod, in my opinion, is a MUST have at Sticks’n’Sushi, and it literally melts in your mouth when you eat it.
If fish isn’t your thing, sticks from the grill include Ibérico Secreto – miso-cured black Iberian pig with lemon; charred chicken wings; and Wagyu Yaki - Japanese Wagyu from Kyushu.
My visit gave me exactly what I’d hoped for and expected – food to die for, an evening fit for a catch up, date night, or celebration, and a full stomach!
