Do you buy a new Halloween costume every year? Do you throw away the cheaply made, fast fashion costume the next day?
Well, you are not alone as according to Hubbub (an environmentally active charity) 90% of families buy a new costume every year and 69% of these costumes are made from synthetic materials which adds up to 2,000 tons of plastic waste every year. Our creepy costumes have a dangerous effect on the environment as they end up in landfills and contribute to the enormous amount of textiles waste.
How can you make a difference?
This year, instead of buying a cheap, poorly made costume, try to make your own costume – this way your costume will be more environmentally friendly, look more admirable, be reusable and will not contribute to the catastrophic amount of textiles waste. Other options include reusing your costume from last year, buying from a charity shop or doing a costume swap with your family or friends.
Halloween can be a fun and amusing celebration, but it is also important to be mindful of the environmental factors we may be contributing to. By having an eco-friendlier costume, we can have just as much fun but without polluting the environment.
