Walthamstow is home to a nature reserve which is the biggest of its type across the whole of Europe.
A host of events have been organised this winter by London Wildlife Trust at Walthamstow Wetlands, which is the largest urban wetland reserve in the continent.
It spans 211 hectares and is home to a variety of birds, mammals and fish.
Even some of England’s rarer species can be found here including peregrine falcons, kingfishers and European hedgehogs.
Walthamstow was recently included in Muddy Stilettos’ top 300 places to live in the UK.
The wetlands were mentioned as a key feature of Walthamstow, providing green space for both nature-loving visitors as well as locals.
London Wildlife Trust has planned events throughout November and December such as night sky moon talks, guided walks and insect DNA mapping days.
According to the trust’s website, a Full Moon talk will be hosted by astronomy enthusiast Michael Lomotey on November 14 followed by a tour through the wetlands to view the night sky.
The website advises visitors to “feel free to bring binoculars and a red-light torch”.
Another event is a daytime guided walk on Thursday November 7.
This will “focus only on the social history of Walthamstow Wetlands” and offer an insight into how “the land of Walthamstow Wetlands has changed throughout the years”.
Insect DNA mapping, a citizen science project, will involve "supporting sample collection, processing and identification".
This is “perfect for anyone who wants to be part of understanding and safeguarding our local insect populations” as well as “anyone looking to learn more about careers in biodiversity science, conservation, or develop skills in science engagement and education” according to the trust.
The next of these opportunities fall on Sunday December 1.
