A Belgravia institution will open a second outpost in St John's Wood on Thursday (Nov 14th), promising an 'elegant yet relaxed dining experience'.

For four decades, Motcombs bar and bistro in Motcomb Street exuded old school glamour, welcoming everyone from A-list actors and politicians to football managers and sporting stars.

It was founded in 1982 by restaurateur and raconteur Philip Lawless, who transformed a small cafe into one of London's buzziest bar-restaurants and became one of the capital's most famous hosts.

He sold up several years ago and now the new owners are bringing Motcombs' "home away from home" charm to the North London neighbourhood while pledging to maintain the "same level of service and quality".

Taking over the former site of Chucs Italian restaurant in Circus Road, Motcombs will celebrate the best of British, European, and Asian cuisine with a focus on seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients.

Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, it will also be serving up New York style thin crust pizzas.

Under Head Chef Rafal Novak, (formerly of Gordon Ramsay and Salty Girl), dishes include eggs Benedict with honey-baked ham, Motcombs Shepherd’s Pie, Dover Sole and their famous Vodka Penne in a creamy tomato sauce with a touch of chilli.

Drinks range from brunch favourites of Bloody Marys and Peach Bellinis to signature cocktails like the Motcombs Old Fashioned and Espresso Martini, while bar snacks include a trio of gourmet hot dogs or - 'Posh Dogs'.

Design wise it maintains Motcombs’ signature aesthetic of contemporary elegance. The front dining room has two striking chandeliers, while the wood-panelled bar is more traditional with a marble countertop.

Lawless, who had previously managed Mayfair restaurant Scott's, was famed for putting his art collection on the walls. The new venue will continue the trend with original artwork in the dining room.

Owner Ross Anderson said: "After more than 40 years in Belgravia, we are truly excited to open our doors in St John’s Wood and join its vibrant community.

"We hope to become a local favourite among our new neighbours, bringing the same warm, welcoming charm that Motcombs is known for. Whether you're popping in for breakfast, catching up over afternoon cocktails, or celebrating a special occasion.”
