Bike lanes in Enfield
Due to the newfound popularity of travelling without using the car, the government has encouraged many forms of travel that do not harm the environment: including cycling. This has been a scheme pushed by many local councils of London boroughs, with a prime example being Enfield.
Lime bikes and scooters
One example of Enfield trying to increase bike usage is the increase in e-scooter/bicycle parking in the borough. TfL allow rental e-scooters to be rode on cycle lanes, clearly showing how they are being pushed on to the public, which I believe is a good thing as all of us need to contribute to helping the environment, and renting out these scooters will allow TfL to create even better measures to encourage cycling. An anonymous resident of Edmonton described how he “takes the Lime bike every day to the station” and how the council has made it “easy to navigate [his] way using only a bike.” The public of London have repeatedly shown that if the government pushes an agenda or culture that they want them to follow, it is usually reciprocated by the public themselves – as shown by the heavy increase in Lime cyclists or the effort by the council to improve the C20 cycle lane that runs through the heart of Enfield, as shown in the designated cycleway at the otherwise dangerous for bikes Angel Corner.
In conclusion, we can say that the borough of Enfield has done the best job they could with their limited resources and budget as a suburban borough, in contrast to a borough such as Westminster which, running through the heart of the city, has more access to resources. I believe it shows how the council cares about the wellbeing of its people with its commitments to promote sustainable transport methods while also committing to cleaning up the environment
