One of the consultants at Queen’s Hospital has given the King an insight into his work to improve healthcare in Commonwealth countries.
Professor Gideon Mlawa was invited to a reception at St James’s Palace ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of State conference to highlight the role of healthcare workers in the NHS and abroad.
“Meeting the King has motivated me even more to continue this rewarding work,” Prof Mlawa said afterwards. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the support of my colleagues and the hospital trust.”

Gideon managed to catch the King’s attention to explain his work promoting better health care in countries like Tanzania.
He is a founding member of the Tanzania UK Healthcare Diaspora Association which works in partnership schemes with health services abroad.
His work has inspired others “to give back to their countries of origin” through working in hospitals, in medical research and education and in clinical care.
