Residents in south east London have called for increased police presence in local town centres, with concerns over safety and a need for more diverse shops.
In a recent discussion sparked by the News Shopper’s question on Facebook about what is missing in these areas, Anna Heard pointed out a significant issue.
She stated: "Well Bexleyheath have turned the shopping centre into a fair ground... I only hope there will be plenty of police about as this will only bring trouble."
Many readers echoed the need for increased police visibility.
Kathrine Smith said simply: "Police presence."
Jason Ware added that there is a need for "Armed police."
Lisa M Ellis and Susan Grant also joined others in calling for a stronger police presence.
Angie Beverley highlighted the importance of safety, stating that "Parking and Police" are needed to make town centres safer and more accessible.
Safety concerns were not the only topic raised by residents.
There was also a strong desire for a wider variety of shops to meet everyday needs.
Mark Edward suggested: "Shops that sell stuff that people want/need."
Pamela Willoughby lamented the loss of popular retailers, commenting, "Catford - decent shops, Boots, Bon Marche, Argos, W H Smith, Marks and Spencer—all great shops but all gone."
Frances Pearce agreed, calling for "Decent stores like Debenhams."
Additionally, residents expressed specific types of stores they’d like to see.
Lesley Ross mentioned the need for more "Department Stores," while Michael Robinson suggested "Turkish barbers," and Ichial Jon Street requested an "English Pie Mash shop."
Ian Collins humorously added that he’d like to see a "Ferret grooming parlour."
As discussions progress, it is evident that residents desire a vibrant shopping scene along with a stronger police presence to ensure safety and convenience in south London town centres.
