A Spitfire's cockpit canopy detached mid-flight, causing an emergency return to Biggin Hill airport.
The incident involved a Spitfire IXT, registered G-BMSB, which had taken off from London Biggin Hill Airport for a passenger experience flight on June 25.
Shortly after takeoff, the front cockpit canopy became detached during the climb.
The pilot, distracted by a talkative passenger, had failed to properly close the cockpit side door before takeoff.
This caused the canopy, although closed prior to departure, to not latch properly.
The aircraft, with one pilot and one passenger on board, swiftly returned to the airport after declaring an emergency and landed safely.
Both occupants were uninjured, and the aircraft did not suffer any further damage.
However, the cockpit canopy, which fell into fields near the airport, has not been recovered.
An investigation found that the incident was due to the pilot's low experience with that particular aircraft type and the pre-flight distractions.
In response to the incident, the operator has enforced new safety measures.
A new crew notice has been issued, requiring the cockpit door to be closed before the engine starts.
Pilots are now also advised to maintain a 'sterile cockpit' approach with passengers until after takeoff.
