A light festival is set to return to east London in a bid to brighten up those post-Christmas blues.

The Winter Lights festival will return to Canary Wharf in January, featuring 11 new installations and permanent artworks from artists worldwide.

The free festival, which is now in its ninth year, will transform Canary Wharf into a "luminous landscape" from January 21 to February 1.

It will include new commissions and pieces never before seen in the UK.

Pippa Dale, senior arts and events manager at Canary Wharf Group (CWG), said: "Our Winter Lights festival will be lighting up London’s skies once again in 2025 as it transforms the neighbourhood into a large-scale art exhibition, bringing light to those dark January evenings.

"We’re excited to be able to invite pioneering light creators from across the globe to exhibit in the extraordinary environment of Canary Wharf, bringing our customers and communities together, in what we hope will be our most dynamic show yet."

The line-up will include a range of artworks, from a stack of bathtubs pulsing with light and sound, created by Benedikt Tolar, to a sparkling pool in Cabot Square by Atelier Sisu's Evanescent Droplets.

Other works include an illuminated bird in flight created by Luminariste – Benjamin Nesma and Marc Sicard, and a larger-than-life Portal in Wood Wharf by Lucid Creates.

Visitors are invited to explore the light display, which will be open from 5pm to 10pm each night.

While visiting the festival, people can also experience London's longest-running ice skating rink, based in Canada Square Park, which will remain open until February 23.

Art enthusiasts visiting the installations can download the Winter Lights map from Canary Wharf’s free app to help them navigate the exhibition.

The festival organisers encourage visitors to attend on weeknights, as the weekends tend to be extremely busy.
