A Santa's grotto has reopened at The Mercury shopping centre in Romford.

The attraction, which has been running for almost 30 years, was officially opened by Havering mayor Gerry O'Sullivan.

He was assisted by his four-month-old granddaughter Penelope Alexander.

The grotto's nutcracker, Ian Courtier, deputy centre manager Natalie Bays, and The Mercury's kids club mascot, Marvin the monkey, were also present at the opening.

Natalie said: "The grotto at The Mercury is one of the friendliest in town, we also welcome our animal friends, it’s certainly inclusive, young and old are all welcome."

The grotto will be open every day until Christmas Eve, with no prior booking required.

Tuesdays will offer sensory grotto sessions, which are calmer, more inclusive visits to see Santa for children or adults with additional needs.

These sessions may include reduced crowds or quiet music.

Dog owners are invited to bring their pets to see Santa in his grotto every Wednesday or Thursday.

Visitors with dogs can stop by the helpdesk for an additional doggie treat and a chance to enter a doggie competition at no extra cost.

The Mercury has a host of activities planned for the festive season, including choirs, crafts and Christmas-themed entertainment.
