Frustrated neighbours have started to take an angle grinder to e-bikes abandoned in their private car park after weeks of inaction from Lime.
People living at 35 Coombe Road, Norbiton, say they have had enough of thoughtless cyclists leaving the hire bikes on their property.
They believe that their proximity to the station opposite – which is covered by an exclusion zone – has made their car park an enticing dumping ground.
Some residents have now taken matters into their own hands in the hope of ending the problem, using an angle grinder to dismember bikes that have not been removed by Lime despite their complaints.
A member of the group, who asked not to be named, said that the bikes had become an “absolute nuisance” in recent weeks, and routinely block the entrance to the car park.
“It’s just getting out of hand,” they said. “I’ve had confrontations with the riders themselves, but they’re just not interested. We’ve lost our temper with it.”
They added that they had been regularly informing Lime about the abandoned bikes over the last few weeks, but that the private bike hire company only responded after residents took drastic action.
“When we send them a picture of a cut up bike, within 30 minutes a manager has phoned me up saying they will collect the bikes,” they said.
“It’s fly-tipping on private property, that’s how we see it. I’ve just got to a point where I don’t care, I just need these bikes off the property.”
Despite Lime collecting some of the bikes, riders keep on returning to use the car park as a dumping ground, residents say.
They have now demanded that Lime get a grip of the problem and stop riders from leaving the bikes in the first place.
They said their message to the private bike hire company was simple – “we really are p***** off and we’ve had enough”.
And if nothing changes? “Come and collect your bikes, they’re in pieces."
Lime did not respond after being approached by this paper for comment.
