Offices in Romford town centre could be turned into flats under new proposals.

KGK Consultants has submitted an application for prior approval to turn the unoccupied offices at 136 South Street into two one-bedroom flats. 

These flats would be across the second and third floors of the building, with the existing adult gaming centre on the ground floor remaining unaffected by the plans. 

Access to the flats would be from Atlanta Boulevard at the back, as would the refuse store and space for eight bikes.

Prior approval is used to determine if permission is required for developments where a formal planning application is not needed.

According to the planning statement, proposed building works would involve "upgrading" the interiors of each floor, including a new floating floor and suspended ceiling to each flat.

The applicant argues that the office units already benefit from "adequate daylight", and that the layout of the proposed flats has been designed to make the most of the existing windows.

However, the planning statement reveals that secondary glazing will need to be added to some of the existing windows.

The applicant concluded that the proposals represent "an opportunity to refurbish and extend an existing unoccupied office".

Havering Council is expected to make a decision on the proposals by January 7, 2025.
