A "cunning” doctor who falsified timesheets so he would get paid for hours he did not work has been struck off.
Dr Tariq Al-Habary was working as a consultant at both Orpington Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital when he submitted falsified timesheets between January and May 2021, the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) heard.
The doctor was employed as a locum during the pandemic and colleagues noted he was “very good” at his job.
But Dr Al-Habary began submitting falsified timesheets for shifts he didn’t work whilst forging authorisation signatures, a tribunal heard.
Email chains showed that when concerns were first raised the service manager at the trust said “we have not had any more CVs so can’t afford to let him go”.
It was later proved that Dr Al-Jabary's access swipe card was not used at the hospital on various days he had claimed to have worked.
Dr Al-Jabary’s claimed the timesheets were an honest mistake as he filled them in weeks in advance and sometimes submitted them weeks later.
But the tribunal found this was “persistent, cunning, deceitful, and calculated fraud”.
“The tribunal was mindful that Dr Al-Jabary had obtained significant financial gain through his dishonest claiming of money fraudulently from the public purse,” a report stated.
Dr Al-Jabary's name was struck off the medical register.
