Concerns about a structurally unsafe building in Wallington have caused a major road to close.

Pictures taken over the weekend show the extent of the demolition of what was formerly called The Brook, a building located on Manor Road.

The pictures show scaffolding surrounding the exposed brickwork and crumbling façade.

A local resident told Your Local Guardian that he sent the pictures to the council the previous weekend as he was worried about the safety of the building - even before Storm Bert struck London with high winds.

Sutton Council confirmed that the upper façade of The Brook was deemed unstable following an assessment by its structural engineer on November 24.

The engineer's inspection came after the Met Police and London Fire Brigade cordoned off the area earlier in the day.

Manor Road, a key route between Wallington Green and Wallington High Street, remains closed between Maldon Road and Park Gate Road until the building’s owners take action to stabilise the structure.

Local buses, including routes 151, 410, and 463, have been diverted, causing significant disruption for commuters. The council has urged drivers to avoid the area and allow extra time for journeys.

The building is currently subject to a planning application for redevelopment.

The plans propose a change of use from Class E (café and restaurant) and Sui Generis (audio studio and independent cinema) to Class C3 (residential).

The proposed works include demolishing the existing single-storey rear extension, constructing a part single-, part two-storey rear/side extension, and converting the loft space with alterations to the roofline.

The plans further detail dormer extensions to the front and rear, a window on the flank roofslope, rooflights to the rear, and the creation of five self-contained flats.

Additional features include rear roof terraces for the first and second storeys, front and side fenestration alterations, and the provision of integrated refuse and cycle storage to the rear of the property.

The council has contacted the Health and Safety Executive to inspect the site, and further updates are expected as efforts continue to address the structural concerns.

Sutton Council has apologised for the disruption and committed to providing regular updates as the situation develops.

Manor Road will remain closed until further notice, with access restricted to ensure the safety of residents and pedestrians.

A spokesperson for the London Borough of Sutton said: "The Council and emergency services attended Manor Road in Wallington as soon as they became aware of the issue yesterday.

“The area around an unsafe building was made secure and council officers were on-site most of the day.

"Access to the area is still restricted today. The road closure remains in place between the junctions of Manor Road and Maldon Road / Park Road, and buses are diverted.

“We apologise for the inconvenience this road closure causes but keeping residents and pedestrians safe is a priority.

"The Council has contacted the owners of the building and asked them to make it safe as a matter of urgency.

“We have also been in touch with the Health & Safety Executive and they will be visiting the site.

“The Council will be on-site today to review the situation now that the winds have subsided."

The Health and Safety Executive and KJC Architects have been approached for further comment.
