Friday the 22nd of November marked the beginning of the festive season for many people living in West Wickham. I was fortunate enough to attend some of the events taking place that evening, some of which were very popular with the area's children.
At the heart of the celebrations were the singers from a local choir group, sharing Christmassy tunes and providing a cosy atmosphere. Many schoolchildren could be seen dancing in the centre of the event, some getting the occasional blast from a conveniently placed snow machine.
Perhaps the most memorable aspect was the pair of 'reindeer,' AKA two large horses positioned for people to stroke. Their friendly handlers made sure everyone was gentle and the children loved petting a 'Rudolph' substitute.
Several food stalls were set up in the carpark of local pub The Swan, as well as some selling drinks and deliciously scented candles. They weren't the only source of refreshments, though, because W. Uden & Sons were handing out complimentary mince pies and mulled wine as well as 'Father Christmas' making a guest appearance to give out sweets to local children.
The lights themselves were turned on by the Mayor and have since been lighting up the streets every evening, dazzling passers by and contributing to the Christmas spirit.
All in all, the lights turn-on in West Wickham is an occasion not to be missed, so if you haven't already, feel free to join in the celebrations next year!
