Dramatic doorbell footage has shown the moment a grandmother narrowly avoided serious harm after two cars collided and struck her as she sat parked in her daughter’s driveway.
The crash took place on the evening of November 17 on a stretch of Longwood Gardens, Clayhall that neighbours have long complained about due to safety concerns.
In a video of the crash shared with the Recorder, a white car can be seen pulling out from Beattyville Gardens onto the mini roundabout at the junction.
As it turns around the roundabout, it is spun backwards by a head-on crash with a black car travelling down Longwood Gardens.
This second car then collides with a stationary vehicle parked in a neighbour’s driveway.
The neighbour, who did not want to be named, said that her mum had just parked up and was inside her stationary car when the crash took place.
She added that the grandmother had been crying “hysterically” ever since after suffering both “physical and mental pain” and having her car written off.
Police have confirmed that two people were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service, adding that neither person had “life-threatening or life-changing injuries”.
No arrests have been made but officers continue to make enquiries into the incident.
The daughter of the injured woman has now said that Redbridge Council needs to take action to improve safety measures in the road.
“We are shocked and traumatised,” she explained. “We have lived on Longwood Gardens for over 30 years and the issue is becoming progressively worse.
“We are scared to carry shopping from the boot of our car or to even step outside the house."
She claims that nothing has been done by the council despite a succession of crashes at the junction with Beattyville Gardens over the last decade.
The neighbour first contacted the council three years ago to raise her concerns and to ask for speed humps and raised junctions in Longwood Gardens.
She now fears that there will be a fatal crash in the road before the council decides to act.
“We are completely shocked and upset that Redbridge Council are neglecting and failing to respond and listen to their own community,” she explained.
“If this latest crash is not a cause for concern, I do not know what is.”
Redbridge Council has now confirmed that Longwood Gardens will be looked at to see if there are any "viable safety measures" that can be put in place.
A spokesperson added: "Traditional methods of traffic calming may be difficult to install at this junction.
"This is due to the road being a bus route, the need to adhere to preferences from the emergency services as it is a key route for them, and also due to the number of dropped kerbs.”
