Fans have had high hopes for a movie adaption of the well-known book ‘Wicked’ by Gregory Maguire ever since the magical Broadway production was showcased for the first time in 2003. The fanbase was flooded with excitement after the announcement of part one of the Wicked movie releasing in 2024, and part two in 2025.
Expectations for the film skyrocketed after the casting of Ariana Grande as Glinda, and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba due to their already known talents and fame. Approaching the release of the movie the marketing team collaborated with countless brands, such as H&M, monopoly, and Forever 21, meaning that millions of people worldwide were highly anticipating the the film way before its release on the twenty-second of November 2024.
I watched the movie in the cinema and was immediately in awe of the set design and costumes. Much of the set was practical, having been built at Sky Studios near London. The detailed, magical feel of the set and costumes mirrored the tone of the film and captured the beauty of the storyline. The music, dance, and acting, of course, was incredible, bringing that enthralling feeling of being at a live musical to life on screen.
Although the film was a wonderful watch, I personally felt it was too long, lasting nearly three hours! Due to the film being separated into two parts, the plot did not strongly captivate me until near the end where there is a shocking climax before finishing on a cliff hanger. If you were hoping to watch the film with children, I’d recommend doing so at home to be able to freely take breaks during the movie.
The film was cinematically impressive and perfectly intertwined emotive moments with comedy. I’m eager for part two!
