Two teenagers have been arrested after police officers were taken to hospital due to being exposed to a “corrosive substance” at Surbiton station.

British Transport Police officers were at Surbiton station today (November 29) when they spotted two teenagers, 14 and 16, acting suspiciously just before 4.30pm.

As the officers tried to speak to them, they were exposed to a substance believed to be alkaline.

Two of the officers were taken to hospital.

Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

Seven other officers, including two from the Metropolitan Police, were checked by paramedics.

A 14-year-old and a 16-year-old boy were arrested on suspicion of carrying a corrosive substance and conspiracy to commit GBH (grievous bodily harm).

The 16-year-old was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Surbiton Station was closed earlier in the evening by the London Fire Brigade.

The station has since reopened after being made safe.

Police have announced that they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident, but the investigation is ongoing.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: “Officers were at Surbiton railway station today (29 November) at around 4.20pm when they spotted two people acting suspiciously.

“As officers engaged with the people, they were exposed to a substance believed to be alkaline.

“Two officers were taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-changing or life-threatening.

“Seven other officers, including two officers from the Metropolitan Police were checked at the scene by paramedics.

“Two boys, aged 14 and 16, have been arrested on suspicion of possession of a corrosive substance in a public space and conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm.

“The 16-year-old has been taken to hospital as a precaution.

“Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection and enquiries are ongoing.

“The station was closed while the London Fire Brigade made the area safe, but has since been reopened.”
