The focus for this year's disability history month is on disability livelihood and employment in the health and care sector. It is a chance to celebrate and recognise the contributions of people with disabilities. We can also learn more about the daily struggles disabled people may have to go through and to spread awareness on this topic.

In 2024, there is still a 30% gap between the employment rate for non-disabled people (83%) and disabled people (54%). Disabled people may be less likely to get employed because employers have the mindset that they can't work as hard, or will lose them money. This is just simply unfair and this mindset needs to change.

As well as this, the theme this year emphasises the importance of accessibility in our modern world. It should not be difficult for disabled people to do simple tasks and getting on with their daily life. There are many inaccessible places for disabled people, and this needs to be changed. Although it is great to see how far we have come, we must still acknowledge that there is a long way to go to get rid of the barriers for disable people.

As we celebrate Disability History Month 2024, let us celebrate the achievements, promote empathy, and try to make the world a place where disability is not a barrier to success or belonging.
