An 85-year-old man thought he was going to die during a drunken attack by his own stepson.

Sean Morrish, 53, was at his elderly stepfather’s home in Bexleyheath on August 2 when he lost his temper and repeatedly punched him in the face.

The pensioner, who was sitting in a chair throughout the attack, was rushed to hospital with extensive cuts and bruises to his face.

“I thought I was going to be killed during the assault,” he said in a victim impact statement which was read out in Woolwich Crown Court.

“I’m scared that next time he might kill me.”

The pensioner added that he’s extremely upset that his relationship with his stepson is broken.

Morrish, of Knee Hill in Abbey Wood, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm and appeared in court for sentencing on Tuesday (November 26).

Judge Philip Shorrock said: “You made a prolonged and persistent assault on you stepfather as he sat in a chair in his own home.

“At the time you were drunk, despite being told on a number of occasions by him that you were not welcome to go there if you were in that state.

“You inflicted nasty injuries on him but fortunately they went no further than cuts or bruises – there were no broken bones.”

The court heard that Morrish has moderate learning difficulties but Judge Shorrock concluded that this was not what caused the attack.

“You lost your temper with your stepfather. You did what you did because of that and because you were drunk,” Judge Shorrock said.

"This was a shocking attack on an old man in his own home, there can only be one outcome.”

He sentenced Morrish to three years in prison.
