An 11-year-old Elstree schoolboy beat tennis ace Andy Murray on a virtual court last week.
William Stein, who attends Aldenham School, in Aldenham Road, Elstree, beat off 31 people aged between seven and 70 in a Nintendo Wii competition to play the British number one player at the National Tennis Centre, in Roehampton, on November 3.
The Year 7 pupil, who lives in Mill Hill, claimed the Highland Spring Nintendo Wii tennis tournament championship trophy after winning 3-1 against Murray He described it as a “dream come true”.
“I still can’t believe that I did it,” he said. “I thought I would ask him a few questions, but I smiled so much, I didn’t talk.”
William has spent many hours playing the console he was given at Christmas, and entered a prize draw run by water company Highland Spring to enter the tournament.
Murray said: “I’m a huge fan of computer games, so it was great to be involved in the tournament. The Shanghai Masters are about to commence and with an intense training schedule, it was a good way of getting some practise in and having some fun at the same time.”
Despite Murray winning the first game, and nearly winning the second game, William came out on top, winning the second, third and fourth.
Murray conceded William was the better player on the day, and William in turn said that he was a good loser and “was trying his best”.
“He was quite kind,” he said, “he said ‘good game’ and congratulated me on winning”.
