Angry Lambeth Council tenants protested outside a council housing conference on Saturday, before dozens walked out of the proceedings after heckling council leader Steve Reed.
Tenants council chair Rosario Munday handed a petition to Councillor Reed demanding the council scrap plans for an above-formula rise in tenants’ rents next April of up to £14 a week.
She also called for management of Lambeth’s housing stock to be returned to the council and proposed job and service cuts be scrapped.
Ms Munday said more than 60 people then walked out of the Tenants Conference held at the town hall after booing Coun Reed’s speech.
But Coun Reed argued that only 20 people left and many returned.
He added he would never walk out on his job of making Lambeth’s housing service better for everyone, and would work with anyone wanting to help achieve that.
